I was born and grew up in Seoul, Korea, and moved to Los Angeles with my family at the age of 19. I obtained all my degrees from the UCLA Computer Science department. During 2000-01, I worked at Aplus Design Technologies, which later became a part of Magma Design Automation, Inc. In 2001, I moved to Atlanta to join the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech.

Sung Kyu Lim (S'94-M'00-SM'05) received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the Computer Science Department, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in 1994, 1997, and 2000, respectively.
From 2000 to 2001, he was a Post-Doctoral Scholar at UCLA, and a Senior Engineer at Aplus Design Technologies, Inc. He joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology in 2001, where he is currently an Associate Professor. His research focus is on the architecture, circuit design, and physical design automation for 3D ICs. He is the author of Practical Problems in VLSI Physical Design Automation (Springer, 2008).
Dr. Lim received the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award in 2006. He was on the Advisory Board of the ACM Special Interest Group on Design Automation (SIGDA) during 2003-8 and received the ACM SIGDA Distinguished Service Award in 2008. He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration Systems (TVLSI) during 2007-9 and served as a Guest Editor for the ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems (TODAES). He has served the Technical Program Committee of several conferences on electronic design automation including ACM Design Automation Conference (DAC) and IEEE International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD). His work is nominated for the Best Paper Award at ISPD'06, ICCAD'09, CICC'10, and DAC'11. He is a member of the Design International Technology Working Group of the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). He has been leading the Cross-center Theme on 3D Integration for the Focus Center Research Program (FCRP), Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), since 2010. Dr. Lim is a senior member of the IEEE.
