Luis Miguel Cortes Pena

Welcome to my home page. My name is Luis Miguel Cortes Pena. I am a PhD student at Georgia Institute of Technology in the school of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Background

I was born in Tunja, Boyacá, Colombia. I moved to Puerto Rico when I was three years old. I did my high school in CROEM, Mayaguez P.R., one of the top high schools in Puerto Rico, specialized in Math and Science. I am proud to say that I am a CROEMITA, class of 2002. I moved to New Jersey when I was 17 to attend College at Stevens Institute of Technology. A year an a half later, I transferred to Georgia Tech. Finished my undergrad and this semester I am finishing my masters degree. I currently look forward to continuing my PhD.

Why do I have four names?

The reason I have four names is because in Latin-America, we have two last names. The first last name is the father's and the second is the mother's. So my first name is Luis, my middle name is Miguel, my first last name is Cortés (my father's first last name) and my second last name is Peña (my mother's first last name, because women do not lose their last names when they get married in Latin America). Most latinos stick to first name, first last name, but when I applied to school in the US, my mother concatenated both my last names (to represent her also).

Research Interest

I am currently a research assistant, under the supervision of Dr. Doug Blough. Currently, my work involves researching MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) antennas at both a transmitter and a receiver. My focus is to understand the operation of MIMO so that it can be accurately modeled in GTNetS (a packet level network simulator) for further research and experimentations in the area of Wireless Mesh Networks.
