Biography
Josep Miquel was born in 1984 in Tarragona, Spain. He obtained his Engineering Degree in Telecommunications and a Master of Science in Information and Communication Technologies, from the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria de Telecomunicació (ETSETB), within the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
His research career started during the last two years of his Engineering Degree, by the hand of Pr. Dr. Lluís Jofre Roca, within the Departament de Teoria del Senyal i Comunicacions (TSC), UPC, with a research scholarship from the Spanish Government. His area of research was focused on Ultra Wide Band (UWB) Imaging techniques.
During the course 2007-08, he pursued his Master Thesis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Dr. Milica Stojanovic, with a fellowship from the Vodafone Foundation. His area of research was focused on the design of Energy-Efficient Multi-hop Underwater Acoustic Networks. From September 2008 till December 2008, he continued with his previous research as a visiting researcher at MIT.
Currently, he is a PhD student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, in the Broadband Wireless Networking Lab under the supervision of Pr. Dr. Ian F. Akyildiz, with a fellowship of “la Caixa”. He is also a member of the N3Cat (NaNoNetworking Center in Catalunya). His current research is focused on Nanonetworks and Graphene-enabled Wireless Communication.
Selected Honors and Awards
- Awarded with a travel grant by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of Maine, to participate in the Nanoelectronic Devices for Defense & Security Conference, NANO-DDS, Brooklyn, NY, USA, in August 29-September 1, 2011.
- BWN Lab 2010 Researcher of the Year Award, for his outstanding research achievements throughout the year.
- Fundación Caja Madrid Fellowship, awarded to outstanding graduate students from Spain to pursue graduate studies abroad, with full funding support for the duration of the 2011 and 2012 academic years. This fellowship is given personally by the Prince and the Princess of Spain.
- Excellent Reviewer of 2009 of the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering. [PDF]
- Awarded with a travel grant by US National Science Foundation (NSF) and by IEEE Communications Society, for attending the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), Cape Town, South Africa, May 2010.
- Colonel Oscar P. Cleaver Award, outstanding graduate student in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Spring 2009.
- "la Caixa" Fellowship, awarded to outstanding graduate students in Spain to pursue graduate studies abroad, with full funding support for the duration of the 2009 and 2010 academic years. This fellowship is given personally by the King and the Queen of Spain.
- Awarded with a travel grant by ACM, SigMobile Special Interest Committee, to attend the Third International Workshop on Underwater Networks (WUWNet) in conjuction with ACM MOBICOM 2008 Conference, San Francisco, California, September 2008.
- Graduated from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spring 2008, with the rank of 2 out of 200 students in the Escola Tècnica i Superior d'Enginyeria de Telecomunicació de Barcelona.
- Vodafone Foundation Fellowship, awarded to outstanding graduate students in the Escola Tècnica i Superior d'Enginyeria de Telecomunicació de Barcelona, to conduct graduate research in the USA, Fall 2007-Spring 2008.
