Rungsun Munkong
About Me
Hi, my name is Rungsun Munkong, I go by nickname Roy (in fact people back home called me "Golf" which doesn't mean I am any good in that kind of sport). I'm doing my Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, a.k.a. Georgia Tech. I'm originally from Prachinburi, a province 80 miles east of Bangkok, Thailand. After I finished high school 8 years ago, I came to the U.S. to attend colleges. Yes, I know, after all these years, I am still in school!!! (and most probably will be in this one for a while longer). Hey, you know what? it's not that bad to be in school... really. Here at Georgia Tech besides taking interesting classes I am also doing some cool research at Center for Signal and Image Processing in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. My advisor is Dr.Fred Juang. I received a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from UC Berkeley in Spring of 2000 and an M.S. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in Spring 2002. I have been at Georgia Tech since fall of 2002.

Research Interests
My curruent research is in speech processing, particularly on obtaining and applying the rich multi-dimension cortical representation of sounds to the automatic speech recognition tasks.
Current Classes
I am taking two classes this semester: Math 4318: Analysis II is a cool math course that tells you all about real sequences, series and its cool properties such as smoothness (derivatives), integrability, and convergence. ECE-8873: Data Compression and Modeling is a research-oriented course that that goes deep into all the compression theories and real-world applications. In this course, we will get a chance to do 2 cool projects. First project is the report on the existing compression standards. I get to do G.729 ITU-T standard of speech coding (aimed at telephone quality at low bit rate of 8kbs) Second project is the software tool project that aim at finding and compiling the useful tools related to compression for everyone in the class to share. The software can be written by us or found from available free sources on the web. Here is my software project proposal. Cool huh?
