Industrial Contributions

Xudong Wang has invented and also successfully implemented the following MAC protocols based on IEEE 802.11 technologies:

  • Distributed Single-Channel TDMA MAC for Wireless Mesh Networks Based on IEEE 802.11
  • Distributed Multi-Channel TDMA MAC for Wireless Mesh Networks Based on IEEE 802.11

These MAC protocols have integrated novel schemes of distributed TDMA scheduling, distributed channel and time slot allocation, fast channel switching, software MAC architecture, and cross-layer design. These technologies have been successfully transferred into Kiyon’s mesh point (MP) and mesh access point (MAP). They are backward compatible with existing 802.11 standards and will be compliant with the emerging IEEE 802.11s standard. Field tests of these products have demonstrated great performance in scalability and throughput.

Xudong Wang’s inventions also include fast roaming, multi-radio mesh networking, single-radio client access, and dynamic frequency selection, which are all building blocks of Kiyon’s MP and MAP products.

Currently Xudong Wang is also working on a Mesh-QoS project with an objective to simultaneously deliver VoIP, IPTV, and data traffic over wireless mesh networks. This project involves research and development efforts in multiple protocol layers including MAC, routing, transport, and mobility management.

He has also invented layer-2 routing with distributed MAC for UWB mesh networks, in which functions such as layer-2 routing, distributed time slot and channel allocation, virtual multi-hop networking, and rate adaptation work together as one module in the same MAC protocol.
